Bob Flayhart has been preaching a sermon series for the past month or so on revival and renewal at Oak Mountain. In yesterday’s service, he opened with this clip from U2 singing “Yahweh”.
Have you heard a more clear prayer for renewal lately?
Take these shoes
Click clacking down some dead end street
Take these shoes
And make them fitTake this shirt
Polyester white trash made in nowhere
Take this shirt
And make it clean, cleanTake this soul
Stranded in some skin and bones
Take this soul
And make it singYahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I’m waiting for the dawnTake these hands
Teach them what to carry
Take these hands
Don’t make a fist noTake this mouth
So quick to criticize
Take this mouth
Give it a kissYahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, Yahweh
Still I’m waiting for the dawnStill waiting for the dawn, the sun is coming up
The sun is coming up on the ocean
His love is like a drop in the ocean
His love is like a drop in the oceanYahweh, Yahweh
Always pain before a child is born
Yahweh, tell me now
Why the dark before the dawn?Take this city
A city should be shining on a hill
Take this city
If it be your will
What no man can own, no man can take
Take this heart
Take this heart
Take this heart
And let it break
Is it harder to hear this prayer coming from a Rock Star and not a Pastor? Why or why not?
There was a time when I would have been uncomfortable hearing these words from a rock star. I needed to filter everything I heard about God (or to God, in this case) through my "discerning mind". But it really was just improper judgement of others. I was a pharisee who couldn't see my own faults.
Now, I'm learning that all truth is God's truth. If there is any virtue, if there is any praise (Philippians 4:8), it's all good, and it's all His.
I can totally relate!
