Melody and I had the privilege of sharing our story last weekend at Roopville Road Baptist Church in both the morning and evening services and we were blown away by the energy and authentic community present there. We had lunch with the entire church staff and got to experience the exceptional culinary gifts and hospitality of Lisa Peeples, the Pastor’s wife. Let me just say it was some of the best peach cobbler I’ve had in quite some time!
In preparation for these messages, Melody and I began to see our story through the lens of the two brothers in Luke 15. Both brothers represent the way we come to the Father and also how we hide. For most of Melody’s life, she hid in plain sight and based God’s love for her on what good things she had done, like the elder brother. I vacillated back and forth between the elder brother and the prodigal and believed that I would never measure up to God’s standard of holiness because of my struggle with pornography and sexual sin.
As we share in these messages, our reconciliation didn’t happen because we both decided one day to see if we could work things out. Our reconciliation took place because God brought both of us out of hiding and introduced us to the reality of His scandalous grace. As we began to experience life without our masks, we looked up one day and realized that God had brought our ex-spouse to the same place. Granted our paths were vastly different and took many unexpected turns, but our destination was a deeper understanding of the Gospel.
For those of you who haven’t had the privilege of hearing Melody sing, she sings a solo in both services. As you listen to these messages, ask God to reveal to you ways that you are hiding right now…either in plain sight or in shame.
