Jamie Peterson, my college buddy who shepherds Christ Community Church in Frisco, Texas, sent me an email introducing me to Darren Mabrey almost a year and a half ago. Jamie and Darren’s paths had crossed soon after he moved to the Dallas area and Jamie could hear similarities in Darren’s story that he already knew to be true of mine. Darren and I had an hour long conversation on the phone and could tell immediately that we had definitely been traveling a similar road over the past few years.
On a recent trip to Dallas to lead a Men’s Retreat for Jamie’s church, I finally had the opportunity to meet Darren in person. He picked me up around 6 pm and we camped out at a local coffee shop for the next five hours or so…both of us giddy-excited to meet someone else with such a similar story to our own. I’m sure the coffee-shop employees and other patrons were wondering about the two loud guys on the patio who were lost in such deep conversation… talking as much with their hands as they did with their mouths. I was privileged to hear Darren’s painful yet redemptive story and left encouraged by his passion to help other men step out of the shadows of their shame. As you will see in Darren’s video above, he has walked the gut-wrenchingly painful journey into his own stuff and has emerged on the other side with a wonderfully contagious limp.
Melody and I hope that we have the opportunity to work with Darren and his wife, April in the coming months and wanted to introduce you to their story.
What is keeping you from stepping out of the shadows and sitting in the chair?
Love you, Robbie! Let's get together soon and catch up, brother!
